What is towing capacity?

Towing capacity is the maximum weight your vehicle can safely pull behind it, as rated by the manufacturer. It assumes a properly equipped vehicle — the right engine, axle ratio, tow package and hitch — and it is not the same as payload (what you can carry in the vehicle).

Two rules experienced towers live by: stay under 80% of your max for a comfortable safety margin, and remember that tongue weight counts against payload, not just towing capacity. Our free calculator applies both rules to your exact setup.
